My timing’s off, by about two months…

My brothers in arms have sure made the news a lot lately, and not just for their typical feats, like 30 Marines whooping up on 250 Taliban.

No, they’ve allegedly urinated on Taliban corpses and posed with a Nazi flag. It’s this second item I wanted to post on.

As a matter of fact, this very incident comes up in my second novel that should be getting published in the next couple of months. And just like is being said in this news article, my main character has the SS branded into his chest to stand for Scout Sniper, not to make some statement about the Holocaust.

In fact, my buddy (who I won’t name) became a Scout Sniper and had these very two letters — SS — branded into his chest. He was proud of them. Not for their Nazi connotation, but for their Scout Sniper reference.

So, I understand why some are upset by this, but I’m confident most Marines have no idea about the historical context of these letters. Or at least they didn’t until the shit hit the fan with this photo.

And just as this article has fueled quite a debate in our country, so, too, does it generate quite a bit of debate in my book. It’s just too bad this news broke before my book did… Now, it’ll seem like I just lifted it after the fact.

  1. Write faster, Stan! I know your frustration. As I write about our history in the making, I have had my great stories (in my eyes at least) preempted by some seemingly self-serving press release. 🙂

    • Hah! Indeed, I must. I’ve honest to goodness been working on this novel since 2001. I kept getting stuck with the plot, and then I get it almost done, and kaplow! Timing’s off.

And boy are you correct about those press releases…
